Starting January 1, 2026, amendments 42-24 to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) will introduce significant changes regarding the transportation of charcoal. Specifically, the previous dangerous goods list exemption for charcoal has been removed, and special Regulation 978 has been added for charcoal (UN1361), implementing stricter and more mandatory requirements for declaration, packaging, traceability, and safe operations.
To ensure the safety of crew, vessels, and customer cargo, MSC announced that starting from November 1, 2025, it will strictly enforce the above provisions of the IMDG rules.
